DescriptionThis presentation will unfold in two parts. First, we will unpack the processes through which the transition to renewable energy is implicated in (i.e., shaping and being shaped by) social relationships to land and landscapes. Through this discussion we will bring energy transitions theory into dialogue with landscape theory. Second, we will explore changing patterns of energy production and use on the British overseas territory of Bermuda from circa 1819 to present day. Empirically, the case study traces the evolution of Bermuda’s energy system throughout the island’s efforts to establish itself as a British Royal Navy outpost, then as a coaling station, and more recently as a tourist destination. We will draw connections between these histories and the contemporary political ecological factors that currently shape renewable energy deployment on the island. ...
