Shore Ridges Conservation Area

Activities: Free Admission, Lake River Reservoir, Hiking, Snowshoeing, Cross Country Skiing, Explore the Outdoors

This area is 443 hectares (1100acres) of land and offers trails for year round use by hikers, cross-country skiers, geo-caching and nature viewing from the escarpment and winding through hardwood forest. The trails follow a portion of routes once used by the Ojibwa as they traveled along the ridge from their camp at Gros Cap to the Hudson’s Bay Post in Sault Ste. Marie for trading.

This area also contains an area of provincially significant wetland which has been determined by an evaluation system known as the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES). Wetlands have the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem and are important to reduce flooding, filtering and storing water, reducing erosion, and provide critical habitat and food for flora and fauna.
