Gros Cap Conservation Area

Activities: Free Admission, Lake River Reservoir, Hiking, Winter Facilities, Snowshoeing, Cross Country Skiing, Explore the Outdoors

The geology of this area is unusual because it is situated on a batholith; a large deep-seated body of intrusive igneous rock consisting of coarse-grained granite created long ago when magma miles blow the surface forced it way upward. This area exhibits a wide variety of vegetation types including mixed forest, cedar swamp, hardwood stand and significantly rare wildflowers. The 40 kilometer (25 mile) Saulteaux section of the Voyageur Trail starts in the Gros Cap Conservation Area and runs through to the Hiawatha Highlands Conservation Area.
