Enjoy a visit to Backus, where history meets nature. Camp, fish, hike, swim, enjoy a special event, travel back in time or relax in the great outdoors, all just minutes north of the lakeside communities of Port Rowan and Long Point. The park offers 160 campsites spread over five campground areas. Sites range from tenting sites to 98 sites with electrical service and a unique overnight cabin. The mill pond is stocked with rainbow trout, providing a great spot to teach youngsters how to fish. Browse exhibits in the Conservation Education Centre that highlight the area’s natural features or take part in one of the many guided nature hikes and programs. Experience the historic location of the 1798 Backhouse Grist Mill National Historic Site, one of the few mills in Norfolk not destroyed during the War of 1812. Step through the doors and discover how stone ground flour was produced over 200 years ago. Visitors can view more than 15 historic buildings and antique farm equipment in Backus Heritage Village. Costumed interpreters help bring history to life during summer months and special event days. Backus Heritage Conservation Area is owned and operated by the Long Point Region Conservation Authority.
