Description | The Life and Music of a Canadian Legend: Amice Calverley Featuring: STORYTELLING OF AMICE’S ADVENTURES BY SYBIL RAMPEN and LIVE PERFORMANCES OF AMICE’S COMPOSITIONS BY THE OAKVILLE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA PRINCIPAL STRING QUARTET Friday, October 5, 2018, 7:30pm Amice Calverley — Sybil Rampen’s Aunt Explore the life, music and art of Egyptologist Amice Calverley (1896-1959), one of Oakville’s most fascinating past residents. This evening of storytelling and music will explore Amice’s extraordinary accomplishments and globetrotting adventures. Amice studied music at the Toronto Conservatory of Music under Dr. Healey Willan and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music. In England she studied with Vaughan Williams and set her heart on writing an opera. In 1926, she met the archaeologist Leonard Woolley who, discovering her artistic talents, encouraged her to pursue archaeological drawing instead of music. A few years later she was given the incredible task of recording the decoration in the Temple of Seti I, where she produced hundreds of images which were later published in volumes funded by J. D. Rockefeller. In the summer of 1933 in Austria, she wrote a Quartet in F Minor, which was subsequently performed in Vienna, London, and Canada. When she returned to Canada she bought and remodelled a lake-side estate in Oakville. Her home, a converted coach house, became famous in Toronto music circles as the place for chamber music concerts. Don’t miss this special event!
