Description | Similar to the popular summer Porch Chat series, this Winter Edition is indoors! Join the 2017 Community Course participants for a conversation about unlearning, challenging assumptions and critical action. Find out what each of the participants learned from the course and how they intend to move it to action.
Since crime prevention is more than just locking your doors at night and sending people to jail for committing a crime, this course was designed to help people look beyond the accepted status quo, think critically about crime, justice and prevention issues and to examine issues from every possible perspective. Over seven weeks we just scratched the surface on big questions such as: How do we build a culture of prevention where we understand that addressing the roots of crime in a constructive manner could resolve social issues? What if we could change things about our society and community so that crime is prevented before it ever happens? Can we shift our understanding of the relationship between crime, justice and prevention to create a true culture of prevention? What cultural, political or social structures impede us from creating a culture of prevention? We certainly don't have all the answers to these questions but we're interested in sharing what we learned in the process and how this critical reflection has shifted or changed some assumptions or the way we think about crime justice and prevention.
